Cambridgeshire - Old River Nene - Whittlesey to March

How to get there - Whittlesey is about 6 miles east of Peterborough on the A605. (map)

Suggested Launch Site - Access is from the lock landing stage below the lock in Whittlesey (272965) Take the signs to the Manor Leisure Centre and then Benwick and turn right into Aliwal Rd. Access is just over the river bridge, where there is limited parking.

General Description - This is an uneventful but pleasant rural paddle of about 10 miles with no weirs or locks to negotiate. There is a slow flow (in June about 2km / hour) and the water, especially at the March end, is clean and pleasant, with an abundance of flowering plants including water weeds and lilies.

A suitable lunch stop is at Staffurths Bridge (366945 see map) where a public footpath on the left bank affords a wide grassy area. Get out on the right just through the bridge. (The lunch stop is exactly on the Greenwich meridian - a new sign declares this!)

The approach to March is particularly attractive through West End; tree lined with some attractive houses to envy. A local tourist information site describes it thus:-

"Busy market town, which originally prospered as a minor port, trading and religious centre. The 'West End' riverside area has been likened to a Thames-style village in miniature, with its old cottages and attractive gardens. St. Wendreda's Church is noted for its magnificent double hammerbeam angel roof."

The best place to get out is just before the Town Bridge on the right, where a landing stage leads one straight to the door of the Acre pub - open all day with meals. Unfortunately it's a Greene King pub, but they often have guest beers. (route)

Park in West End Car Park (follow the signs for the Library in City Road).

Bricabrak aficionados will revel in the two second hand shops in Acre Rd and it is a minute walk to the town centre, such as it is!
