Canoe Days Out

Wiltshire - Kennet & Avon Canal - Rowde to Barge Inn, Seend (& return)

This page was submitted by Keith Day (E-mail this submitter)
How to get there - The start point was actually Foxhangers Wharf at Lower Foxhangers Farm where we were camping overnight. This can be found on the A361, 3 miles west of Devizes (just where the electricity pylons cross the road) (map)

Suggested Launch Site - If you follow the track through the farm it leads to an old wharf at the base of the famed Caen Hill flight of locks.

General Description - This is a very short trip (5 miles - but with 3 locks in each direction) that we did whilst camping at Lower Foxhangers Farm.

Head south for about two miles until the Seend top lock is reached. The Barge Inn (where we turned round) is after the third lock down. If you are feeling particularly energetic, a further two locks will take you to a one and a half mile lock-free stretch. (route)

My wifes reaction to portaging round these locks inspired me to buy a set of Eckla portage wheels - I've never regretted it!

I didn't take any photos for this trip. If you have some that would apply to this section please email them to me. The photo of Foxhangers Wharf is by courtesy of Chris Franklin. Some of the photos have been supplied courtesy of Martin Norgate. You can see more of his pictures at http://www.envf.port.ac.uk/kacanal/html/kacmainf.htm
