Canoe Days Out

Montgomeryshire - Montgomery Canal - Berriew to Welshpool

This page was submitted by David and Rhoda Wilson (E-mail this submitter)
How to get there - A483 / B4385 junction 6 miles south of Welshpool. Roadside parking. (map)

Suggested Launch Site - Launch from towpath adjacent to road. Finish at canal wharf in Welshpool where you will find the Powysland Museum.(see map)

General Description - The trip down to Welshpool crosses a couple of aqueducts, and is pleasantly rural with cows, herons and moorhens. There are very few powered boats as the Montgomery Canal has not been re-connected to the rest of the Shropshire Union network. About 3 locks to be portaged. (route) Return to start to pick up the car by bus (Arriva service 75, 2-hourly)

The canal higher up, from Berriew towards Newtown is navigable with difficulty, with many obstructions - notably where culverted under the re-aligned A483. There are two dangerous portages across a fast main road. Down from Welshpool I think you can get to Llanymynech, about 8 miles, but not tried out, and there is an interesting heritage site there.

There is a canal museum in Welshpool, and other tourist sites as shown under 'links'.

BCU or British Waterways permit needed.
