Canoe Days Out

Surrey - River Thames - Laleham to Runnymede (& return)

This page was submitted by David Dooley (E-mail this submitter)
How to get there - Go to Laleham, south of Staines. Go through Laleham on the A376, keeping left at the mini round-a-bout. Turn right down Ferry Lane to the Thames. Follow the road to the second car park, just past the camp site. (map)

Suggested Launch Site - The pay car park has toilets. To launch cross the road to the Thames.

General Description - Head upstream on the right. At Penton Hook Lock portage on the right, the first set of steps are better as the second set has a waterline concrete post in their middle. There are toilets at the lock.

Continue upstream passing inside the small island and then Holm Island. There is a low concrete footbridge to the island, but it is not a major obstacle.

Continue under the M25 bridge to Bell Weir Lock. Portage on the left. After two bends look on the left for a boat trip establishment. Land just before this. Picnic, walk to the monuments, or cross the road to the N.T. cafe and toilets. (see map) (route)

Return keeping to the right.

Total distance about 12.5 miles, with two locks in each direction. Of course being the Thames you don't have to portage - the lock keepers will see you through if you want..
