Canoe Days Out

Surrey - Basingstoke Canal & Wey Canal - New Haw (Addlestone) to St John's & Return

This page was submitted by David Dooley (E-mail this submitter)
How to get there - From Junction 11 on the M 25 head towards Chertsey. Turn right on the A 318. Follow this through New Haw. At a round-a-bout the A 318 turns left and goes over a canal bridge. After the bridge look on the right side for the car park. There is a height restriction of about 2 metres. (map)

Suggested Launch Site - Park near the end of the car park. The car park is free, but there are no facilities.

Launch to the left of the lock.

General Description - Head south away from the lock. Just after the M 25 bridge is the junction with the Basingstoke Canal. Turn right as indicated by the sign post. There are 6 locks in the first mile and a half or so of the Basingstoke canal to improve your portage skills.

The Canal is then flat through Woking. Near the St John's district at the end of Woking there is the Bridge Barn pub/restaurant for a meal in winter before returning.

Total distance is about 11 miles, with 6 locks to portage twice. (route)
