Canoe Days Out

Kent - River Medway - Allington/Maidstone to East Farleigh (& return)

This page was submitted by David and Rhoda Wilson (E-mail this submitter)
How to get there - From M20 junction 6 follow signs for Aylesford and look for signs to the Malta Inn 1/4 ml on left from roundabout (map)

Suggested Launch Site - Easy bankside put in by Allington Lock (Medway is a navigation here) - parking in Malta Inn car park with permission - not usually a problem except at busy times

General Description - About 7 miles return to Farleigh Lock, going through centre of Maidstone, after which valley narrows considerably - no locks en route. You can also start from Maidstone - an easy put in by the bridge but due to traffic nowhere to stop except on Sunday mornings! (route)

The tidal section of the Medway below Allington Lock is not really recommended for restful canoeing - strong tides and muddy landings.

Farleigh Bridge is where the Roundheads crossed the river to outflank and defeat the Cavaliers in the Battle of Maidstone 1648
