Canoe Days Out

Herefordshire - River Wye - Hereford to Holme Lacy

This page was submitted by David and Rhoda Wilson (E-mail this submitter)
How to get there - Parking in Victoria Park, Hereford. Go south across bridge in Hereford and after 1/4 mile sharp right (leading to the old bridge and park) (map)

Suggested Launch Site - Short carry across grass and down quite a steep bank to river

General Description - One of a sequence of trips which we did down the River Wye. If you wanted to, you could combine two or more sections to make a longer day out. There is a fairly strong current in places, nothing dramatic, but take these as one-way trips. Above Hereford there are a few more difficult areas. Fot full details, get a copy of 'Canoeist's Guide to the River Wye', £5 from the Environment Agency (or download here). Keep an eye out for storms in the Welsh mountains which can raise the river level rapidly.

This section about 7 miles, to the first bridge below Hereford. Landing is at Lucksall Caravan Site, east bank below bridge, by permission (ring 01432 870213 - no problems encountered). Two cars needed or ring for taxi to get back. (route)

The most open section of the Wye, with hills beginning to appear towrds Holme Lacy. The River Lugg, a left bank tributary, may create some shallows at the junction.

The Hills above Holme Lacy have interesting flora if you have time for a walk. See Fownhope website for pictures.

Additional photographs (particularly of the launch and recovery sites) are needed. If you have such photos please contact the siteowner.
