Canoe Days Out

Yorkshire - Rivers Ure & Ouse Navigation - Boroughbridge to Linton Lock

This page was submitted by Alan Brannon (E-mail this submitter)
How to get there - Boroughbridge is easily accessed from the A1.

Linton Lock is adjacent to Linton on Ouse which is reached from the A19 NW of York. (map)

Suggested Launch Site - Launch from the picnic site adjacent to Boroughbridge Weir into the canal bypassing the weir down a short steep bank. Note that overnight parking is not permitted but is available nearby.

General Description - Apart from the first few hundred yards to Milby lock the route is an easy river journey through a flat agricultural countryside. In normal water levels the river flow is only slight making it possible to paddle the route both ways. This waterway is prone to flooding so make note of the water conditions before planning a round trip.

Route length is just over 10 miles with one lock at the begining. Take out above Linton Lock. (see map) Parking about 100 yards by entrance to camp site for which there is a small charge. As camping is available at Linton Lock an overnight round trip is possible. (route)

Comments:

08 Aug 2007 Jamie 07 Alternatively, about the same distance downstream from Linton Lock (10 miles) gets you to York. The small beach on the right hand side of the river after (I think the third) bridge is an easy outage as it is on the edge of a car park.
17 Aug 2007 Margaret Parminter If you paddle through York you can egress the river on the left at Blue Bridge Lane on the public slipway or just before the Millenium footbridge, river right near Rowntrees Park (which has a free car park).
