Canoe Days Out

Other - Semois (Belgium) - Bouillon to Poupehan

This page was submitted by David and Rhoda Wilson (E-mail this submitter)
How to get there - About 60 miles west of Luxembourg. By public transport, hourly train Brussels - Namur - Luxembourg to Libramont, an hour's bus journey from there. (map)

Suggested Launch Site - Hire canoes for downstream stretch from Semois Kayaks, 32 euros for 15km, longer trips on a weekly basis possible. They will meet you at Poupehan and return to Bouillon

General Description - A very winding stretch of river, with gentle but unremitting rapids for 2 or 3km from Bouillon. One awkward fishing weir after about 7km at the 'Giant's Tomb' (a large hill that the river winds round), pick your spot correctly and it's only a 30cm drop, get it wrong and you ground on top of the weir! Very quiet out of season with only a few fishermen and forestry workers to be seen. 15 km in 2.5 hours

Best to book in advance as owner may not be present in low season, but can run out of kayaks in high season (from end of June)

Other hirers further downstream, Recrealle on www.recrealle.be offering 12/22/27 km, and on a neighbouring river, the Lesse, with stretches of 12/21 km, Lesse Kayaks www.lessekayaks.be and Kayaks Ansiaux ansiaux.nuxit.net/html/fr/kayak_fr.html
