Canoe Days Out

Other - Sure (Luxembourg) - Dillingen to Echternach

This page was submitted by David and Rhoda Wilson (E-mail this submitter)
How to get there - About 20 miles northeast of Luxembourg city, on the German border. Hourly bus service from Luxembourg (note - buy a 5 euro day ticket valid on all trains and buses in the Duchy of Luxembourg). Canoe hire just downstream from bridge (map)

Suggested Launch Site - Hire from 'Outdoor Freizeit', 12.5 euros per person for 12 km (16km available in high season, starting higher up at Wallendorf). Trip ends at steps - an awkward pull up - next to bus station in Echternach, catch hourly bus back.

General Description - Lots of wooded hills. After an overnight thunderstorm, the Sure had risen quickly, and the rapids downstream for half the distance from Dillingen were lively, with lots of little stoppers at the bottom of each rapid. After that it became quieter. I noticed one weir on the Wallendorf section from the bus window. 1.5 hours including lunch for 12km, but normally takes 2.5 hr! Opportunities for photography were limited. Left bank going downstream is Germany, right bank is Luxembourg.

Best to book in high season (from mid-July)
