Canoe Days Out

Shropshire - River Severn - Hampton Loade to Upper Arley

This page was submitted by Jim Thornton (E-mail this submitter)
How to get there - This trip starts on the east bank and makes use of two crossings, the ferry at Hampton Loade and the footbridge at Upper Arley. From the A442 between Bridgnorth and Kidderminster follow the signs to Hampton Loade. Park by the ferry at grid reference SO747864 (map)

Suggested Launch Site - Easy launch from the downstream corner of the car park. If you plan to return by the train or west bank footpath check with the ferry man what time he knocks off. If you have access to a second car or can arrange a car ferry, leave a car at the finish at Upper Arley (map)

General Description - A perfect short day trip - canoeing, walking, steam railway and a ferry.

Five miles, good flow and a few easy grade 1 rapids. After two miles you pass the old Alevely colliery site on the left, now relandscaped.

The Severn Valley Steam Railway (aka the Hogwarts express) follows the river valley. For a circular tour land left just above Upper Arley footbridge. Cross the footbridge, walk 500 yards to Arley station and get the steam train back to Hampton Loade. Use the ferry to get back to your car.

Alternatively take the footpath on the west bank (railway side) back to the start.

NOTE. In May 2007 I did exactly this trip, but in June that year the railway was severely damage by flash floods at Hampton Loade and other points. Currently (Oct 2007) this section of line is not operating. It is planned to reopen in Spring 2008. (route)
