How to get there - Take turning to Melverley in Crew Green, on B4393 west of Shrewsbury (map)
Suggested Launch Site - River bank by bridge. Parking lay-by on north (Shropshire) side of bridge.
General
Description - A downriver trip of about 10 miles, with a surprisingly fast current assisting even in low water conditions. A few shallows but no rapids. A 'Canoeist's Guide to the River Severn' by Sue Drummond telling you which side of islands to go (see links for downloadable version) Watch out for some curious underwater clay humps, and at very low water, the old stone pier of the dismantled railway bridge at Shrawardine.
Wildfowl of all sorts, from teal to herons, well represented. At 3 miles, a friendly pub, The Royal Hill, with enormous meals for a fiver (but doesn't cook every day; ring 01743 741242).
Landing, with quite a steep haul up the bank, either right just before the old road bridge at Montford (Wingfield Arms) or left just after (Severn House Camping). (route) Please ask owner's permission; the camp site owner used to work for the Environment Agency and is river-friendly.
Return to car can be done by public transport - Arriva service 70 to Shrewsbury bus station (1/2-hourly) and Tanat Valley service D74 thence to Crew Green (2-hourly). This trip could start higher up, at Pool Quay, but returning to the start to pick up a car is difficult unless operating with two cars.
