Surrey - River Wey Navigation - near Ripley to Bowers Lock (& return)

How to get there - The suggested start is at the car par at Newark New Bridge on the B367 beween Pyrford and Ripley.

From Junction 10 of the M25 take the A3 two miles south. Take the first exit (slip road to the roundabout) then the third exit (signposted Ripley).In the centre of Ripley village turn right into Newark Lane (B367). Follow this round arround to the right. The car park is on the left before the bridge.
Beware of very limited headroom (map)

Suggested Launch Site - The car park is unsurfaced and canoes will have to be carried onto the narrow road before you can turn left onto the towpath (see photos). Traffic over the bridge is controlled by traffic lights - work with the lights to ensure safety.
Canoes can be launched from the towing path west of the bridge.

General Description - This trip is about 10 miles with 6 locks (three each way) to be portaged.

Set off to the left and you will shortly come to Papercourt Lock with its tiered weir. From here its a mile and a half to Cartbridge in a canalised section ending at Worsfold Flood Gates with a rise of just a few inches. Rejoining the river, its a further half mile to Triggs Lock. From here its canalised again until a sharp right turn at Broad Oak Bridge brings you back into the river for the half mile journey to Bower`s Lock. We had lunch here before returning to the start. We split this section into two days out. (1) Pyrford Lock, about 1.5 miles downstream of Newark (park with permission at The Anchor, they seemed quite happy if you returned there for refreshment) to Cartbridge and (2) Cartbridge (roadside parking) to Bowers Lock. About 7 miles and 6 miles respectively.
