Canoe Days Out

Surrey - River Wey - Guildford to Godalming (& return)

This page was submitted by David and Rhoda Wilson (E-mail this submitter)
How to get there - Millmead car park (pay-and-display) on west bank just south of centre of Guildford; keep bearing left after bridge if coming from town centre. (map)

Suggested Launch Site - Carry canoe across green open space to upper river.

General Description - About 7 miles round trip with three portages at locks. Some currents where the original river is used for the navigation, but still water in artificial cuts.

Interesting geologically: as you pass from chalk to Folkestone sand to lower greensand you travel back through the entire 80 million years of the Cretaceous era. The start of the Wey and Arun canal branches off just south of Broadford bridge, and can be eplored for about half a mile.

Cafe for refreshment at Farncombe Boat House, Catteshall Lock about half a mile short of Godalming. (route)

BCU membership or NT license needed
