Canoe Days Out

Yorkshire - Ripon Canal - Ripon to Oxclose Lock [& return]

This page was submitted by Alan Brannon (E-mail this submitter)
How to get there - Ripon is easily accessed from the A1 (map)

Suggested Launch Site - Park at the car park adjacent to Rhodesfield Lock on the B6265. Access tow path through gate.

Note: The head of the canal at Canal Basin has a notice board saying "no launching from Adjacent moorings" at this more obvious start point.

General Description - This very short canal is an enjoyable short trip with a total distance of no more than 4 miles. Start [or finish] by paddling up to the Canal basin to view the renovated canal buildings. Continue down the canal through one lock to Oxclose Lock where the canal joins the River Ure. (route)

The canal passes Ripon racecourse whose lake is a good spot for birdwatching - A bird hide is located adjacent to the tow path. Oxclose lock has picnic tables and has fine views south over the River Ure which can be entered to extend the trip down river to Boroughbridge if you have a pick up arranged. Things to do apart from canoing: Have a look around Ripon, visit Newby Hall
